Common Email Marketing Mistakes

Here is a list of some common rookie mistakes which will most likely cause spam filters to junk your emails. Avoiding these will not only make your emails look more professional, but it will increase the chance that the emails will actually get delivered.

  • Using spammy phrases like “Click here!” or “Once in a lifetime opportunity!” Run your emails through a spam check tool if you have any doubts.
  • Going crazy with exclamation points!!!!!!
  • USING ALL CAPS, WHICH IS LIKE YELLING IN EMAIL (especially in the subject)
  • Coloring fonts bright red or green
  • If there is no text within the subject line
  • The email contains blank lines that compose more than 70% of the content
  • An HTML email that’s nothing but one big image, with little or no text (since spam filters can’t read images, they assume you’re a spammer trying to trick ’em)
  • Designing HTML email in Microsoft Word and exporting the code to HTML (that code is sloppy, and spam filters hate it)

Your campaign’s open rate can tell you if it ended up in junk folders. If it suddenly dropped below your average, your emails are probably getting flagged by spam filters. If you’re new to email marketing, 20-30% is a rough open rate average.
